Case study: ageing research going viral

Context

Action

Outcome

Dr Ashwin Unnikrishnan and Dr Lindsay Wu from UNSW Sydney are experts in genetics and ageing.

We aimed to build their profiles as ageing experts, particularly for the Millennial/Gen Z audience.

To achieve this, we co-developed fun and youth-focused content for social media, which would feature the researchers’ expertise.

  • Wrote short article about the link between lobsters and immortality, featuring insights from Dr Unnikrishnan and Dr Wu
  • Designed accompanying diagrams of how the ‘immortality enzyme’ telomerase works with graphic designers
  • Developed short vertical video for TikTok and Instagram with social media producer
  • Shared content on UNSW social media channels

"Collaborating with Maddie was an incredible pleasure for myself and for AUSMAP. As someone with minimal experience in making snappy and informative TikTok's, Maddie's knowledge and direction was incredibly helpful and allowed me to share AUSMAP's key message to a new audience.
It's safe to say we are big fans of Mads from the Lab and anyone would be lucky to work with Maddie!"

  • Wrote press release about research in collaboration with Professor Feng
  • Liaised with journal on media approach
  • Pitched story directly to major media outlets

"Being a “clean-slate”, our group has been eager to learn the to dos and do nots for social media from an experienced content creator like Maddie. She really took the time to carefully understand our current situation, needs and future vision, and was able to give very pragmatic and tailored guidance (content strategy, direction and platform selection). Very excited to continue working with Maddie and grow our online presence. Loved her energy and enthusiasm to help!"
